There is
something special about being where
picture post card beauty is everywhere
you look. It tends to slow people down
and let their best side catch up to
them. Durango is such a place. At the
same time, Durango is home to world-
class restaurants, galleries and
one-of-a kind shops. In addition,
Durango boasts the historic Durango
& Silverton Narrow Gauge steam
train. This vintage railway makes a
winding trip through the scenic Animas
River Canyon to the historic mining town
of Silverton. For more adventure there
is Mesa Verde National Park where you
can explore the cliff dwellings of the
Anasazi civilization. There's also golf,
winter sports, white water rafting,
horseback riding, hunting and fishing.
Just about all you need to get your
outlook back in synch.
Located in La Plata County in the
southwest corner of Colorado, Durango is
nestled in the Animas River Valley and
surrounded by the magnificent San Juan
Mountains. Durango has an ideal
four-season climate with moderate
temperatures year round. Average
snowfall reaches 68" in town and
250" at higher elevations. Spring
brings warmer weather and rain with an
average precipitation of 19.2".
Summer temperatures are mild and
humidity is very low. Fall days are cool
and dry. The climate together with
beautiful vistas, endless activity
choices and lots of friendly people has
stamped Durango and the "hidden
gem" of the San Juan's.
